Understanding an Early Pregnancy Test

When you are wondering if you are pregnant or not, sometimes nothing will do except an early pregnancy test; knowing how they work and the symptoms to watch are for are very important.

When you consider that women have been having babies for a very long time, you would think that figuring out when a woman is pregnant would be pretty easy.  Eventually, after a missed period or two and some pregnancy weight gain it is.  However, in early pregnancy, it’s not quite as easy.  Let’s face it, there are times when you don’t want to have to wait for days or even weeks to figure out if what you are feeling is normal for you or normal for pregnancy.  This is one of the reasons why companies have manufactured the early pregnancy test.  Here, we will take a look at how the early pregnancy tests work and gander at some of the natural signs of pregnancy that show up even before a missed period for some women.

One of the things that leads women to think maternity leave and paternity testing is their future are the common symptoms of pregnancy.  After all, who would think to take an early pregnancy test before their period was due unless things had gotten a little strange?  Fatigue has to be one of the most obvious signs of pregnancy.  Of course, you can be tired without being pregnant so it isn’t always that useful of a symptom to watch out for.  Nausea with vomiting or even without is one to keep your eye on though.  Don’t expect this one to show up just in the morning though.  Morning sickness can strike whenever it feels like it.  Another one of the more telling signs of an impending birth is aversions to certain smells or foods that didn’t bother you before.  You might have loved hot dogs yesterday, but today the smell has you bolting for the bathroom.  On the other hand, unexplained or unfamiliar food cravings can be brought on by pregnancy as well.  If it turns out you were right and you are pregnant, you might find that those foods remain a part of your pregnancy diet.

Of course, none of those symptoms really matters much until you find out for sure is they are related to pregnancy or not.  Luckily, even the store bought, over the counter early pregnancy tests are almost always accurate.  In order to understand how the early pregnancy tests work, you are going to need a bit of a science lesson.  Pregnancy tests are designed to detect a certain hormone in the urine.  HCG is short for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and the only time it shows up is when a baby is on the way.  The pregnancy tests you consider in the store will have an indicator on the label to tell you how sensitive it is to the HCG levels.  Tests that can detect HCG levels of 50 to 100 mlU aren’t nearly as sensitive as those that can detect at 20 mlU.  So if you are trying to detect things early, be sure to look for a test that states it is an early pregnancy test.

There are times when even if you are pregnant, the early pregnancy tests aren’t going to do it.  Try to remember that the amount of HCG in a pregnant woman’s body doubles every two days.  If you end up with a negative or non conclusive result, test again in a couple of days.  In the excitement of the moment, it’s easy to grab the wrong strength test.  Double check your test to make sure it was made to detect HCG levels as low as 20.  Another good trick to ensure you get an accurate result from your early pregnancy test is to test with the morning’s first urine.  The HCG will be more concentrated then.
