Buying Maternity Clothes for Each Trimester

Maternity clothes have come a long way in recent history.  There are all kinds of ways a pregnant woman can stretch her clothing budget still be comfortable and look good even when on maternity leave.  Especially true right after you take the pregnancy test.

As much as pregnant women have in common, there is just as much that is different.  Let’s take maternity clothes for example.  What works and is comfortable for one woman, might not be for another one.  Style is another consideration.  Some new moms love advertising their pregnant condition with t-shirts featuring cute sayings, while others might prefer to be a little lower key about the whole thing.  One thing every woman who needs maternity clothes can be thankful for is that the seemingly pregnancy discrimination of manufacturing only one type of clothing is over.  It used to be that maternity clothes were either too cute for words or so drab the expecting mom felt like a pregnant storm cloud.  Designers have listened and there is a whole world of affordable, hip, and durable maternity clothes out there for every personal preference.

Just like every pregnant woman has her own idea of what to wear when she is pregnant, there is also a difference in daily circumstances.  For a new mom who spends the majority of her time at home, maternity clothes shopping is going to revolve around breathable, casual clothing.  Of course, a couple of nicer outfits for dinners out or special occasions are important as well.  For those moms who work outside the home, some are going to be lucky enough to have a maternity uniform.  That makes things a little easier.  Business maternity clothes have come a long way as well.  Most professional women are going to be very happy with the choices available now.  After all, a high powered woman can’t walk around the office in ribbons and bows and expect to be taken seriously.  Luckily, maternity business suits with adjustable skirts and pants, as well as attractive blouses and tops are the norm now.

In the beginning trimester of the pregnancy, true maternity clothes aren’t necessarily what should be the focus.  Many women find it worth their while to buy some regular clothes in a bigger size for this time period.  The larger size will allow for the changes happening with increased breast, abdomen, and hip size making your normal clothes a bit uncomfortable.  These items will also be perfect for the time period right after the baby is born.  It takes a bit of time for the swelling to recede and to lose the pregnancy weight gain.  In other words, you are planning for the months after the baby is born, making larger clothes a sound buy.

There will come a time when maternity clothes will be essential.  Regularly made clothes simply can’t accommodate the increased size and shape of a pregnant belly.  You will need clothes that can move and stretch with you.  In the second trimester, get ready to shop.  Look for items that can be adjusted to accommodate your growing body.  Adjustable ties on dresses, panels on pants and skirts, are just a few ways designers have come up with to lengthen the usefulness of maternity clothes.  Of course, you will have to decide which styles are right for you and your lifestyle.  However, consider buying bikini style underwear so you don’t have to contend with slipping and sliding off the abdomen.  You could also buy pregnancy panties if you really prefer the brief style.  New bras are also going to be a necessity. The good news is if you are planning to nurse your baby after he or she gets here, many maternity bras are made to be used as nursing bras as well.  That will help you get more from your wardrobe budget.

The key element in shopping for maternity clothes is to buy what you like and feel comfortable in.  It is a good thing there are so many different styles to pick from.
