Protecting Your Baby with Public or Private Maternity Insurance

As you will soon learn through your pregnancy, you will be visiting the doctor many times.  There are all sorts of reason why you go to the doctor, and it will happen a lot.  But what if you don't have maternity insurance?

If this is the case, you should look into getting it anyway.  Sure, it may cost some money, but it is definitely worth it.  There are several different kinds of health insurance for pregnancy that can help you with this.

There are many times throughout the nine months that you carry your child that you need to go to the doctor.  Some women without health insurance will avoid many of these visits.  They may seem them as unnecessary and not worth the money.  Or, the may just not be able to afford it.  Either way, this can cause a lot of problems.  It would be one thing if this only harmed the mother.  She is in charge of her own health and she can remain sick if she so chooses.  The baby, on the other hand, does not have the luxury of choice.  They are just as affected by the lack of a doctor's care, maybe even more.  In addition, they can't tell you that they need the help.  Because of this, it is important to go to the doctor anyway.  While you may not care about your own health, you should definitely care about the health of your unborn child.

There are many different kinds of private maternity insurance that you can get in order to help the health of you and your baby.  Some of this is handled through the state.  Each American state has different rules and regulation regarding health insurance for pregnant women.  Most states will offer their own public insurance for the purpose.  This is good because they are very helpful to people who need it.  There is a fairly involved application process, though.  Because of this, you should start applying the day that you learn you are pregnant.  From that day on, you will be at the doctor quite a bit.  Having that insurance will definitely be helpful because it will save you a lot of money.

There are also private insurance companies that provide insurance for pregnant women.  You can find these by calling around to all the companies.  Most states require that private insurance companies provide some kind of pregnancy insurance.  While this is the case, not all companies actually comply with the law, so it may take a bit of effort to find the right company.

The biggest benefit to getting private maternity insurance is that the application process is usually much quicker.  You will have fewer hoops to jump through this way as compared with the public assistance you would get from your local government.  Private insurance is also good because you can find a better plan that covers more of your costs.  This is especially important if you are having any complications with your pregnancy since the public pregnancy insurance may not be able to pay for enough of the bills.

You should know that whether you go with public or private pregnancy insurance, you will only be able to benefit from it for pregnancy related health problems and issues.  For example, you cannot expect the insurance to cover an eye checkup as this is not linked to the baby growing inside of you.  If you need insurance for this type of thing, you will need regular health insurance.  Unfortunately, this is often much too expensive for the average person to get.  At the very least, stick with pregnancy insurance.
